An ash catcher is a small attachment that sits between your bowl and your bong. It catches ash, resin and bits of plant before they reach the main chamber. Your bong water stays cleaner, your glass stays clearer, and you don’t have to deep clean your bong nearly as often.
Most ash catchers also add a second round of water filtration, which cools the smoke down and makes each hit smoother. If you’ve ever asked whether ash catchers are worth it, that’s the answer: a cleaner bong and a smoother rip for not much money.
Your ash catcher goes into the bong’s joint, and your bowl goes into the ash catcher. Smoke moves through the ash catcher first, drops the gunk, and then carries on into your bong like normal.
For a wet ash catcher, add just enough water to cover the perc or the slits on the downstem. If there’s too much, water splashes up into your bowl or gets pulled into your bong. Take a test pull before you pack it, and adjust from there.
A percolator ash catcher has its own perc inside, so smoke gets filtered twice before it reaches you. We carry tree perc, turbine perc, matrix and slit perc ash catchers, plus a few others. More perc means more diffusion and a smoother hit, with a little more drag.
A recycler ash catcher keeps the water moving in a loop instead of letting it sit in one chamber. You get the filtration of a wet catcher with less splashback. That’s a big reason people pick one over a standard perc catcher.
A dry ash catcher doesn’t use any water. It just catches ash and resin before they hit your bong. Pulls stay light and easy, and cleanup is quick. It’s a good pick for smaller bongs that don’t need any extra drag.
Match the ash catcher’s angle to your bong’s joint. If your joint angles upward, you want a 45 degree ash catcher. If it sticks straight out the side, go 90 degree. When the angle is right, the ash catcher stands upright, the water stays where it should, and there’s no extra strain on your joint.
Every ash catcher here is 14mm, the most common joint size on bongs. Most have a male joint that goes into your bong and a female joint for your bowl, so grab a 14mm bong bowl to go with yours. If your bong has a 19mm joint (also called 18mm), use a 19mm to 14mm interchanger from our bong adapters and any 14mm ash catcher will fit.
Red Eye Glass has been making glass in Vancouver since 2003, and their ash catchers range from clean perc styles to fun shaped designs. Red Eye Tek brings the Terminator finish to hex tube and twist tube ash catchers. Gear Premium ash catchers lean on solid percs like turbines and tree arms. Castle Glass Works makes the matrix, 4 slit and well-crafted dry catcher.
Ash catchers are made for flower. If you’re dabbing, you want a reclaim catcher instead. It catches the oil that builds up after a dab, which an ash catcher isn’t built to handle.
Dump and refill the water after every session or two. When it starts to look dirty, plug the ends, add isopropyl alcohol and a bit of coarse salt, shake it, and rinse it with warm water. A bong cleaner and a set of cleaning caps make the job a lot easier. A clean ash catcher keeps your hits tasting fresh.
