A bubbler pipe is a small water pipe that sits somewhere between a hand pipe and a bong. The bowl, water chamber and mouthpiece are built into one compact piece. Smoke bubbles through water before it reaches you, so the hit is smoother and cooler than a dry pipe, and you can still hold it in one hand.
A hand pipe is smaller and simpler, but it’s dry, so hits come out hotter and harsher. A bubbler pipe adds water, which takes the edge off. The trade-off is that a pipe slides into your pocket, while a bubbler needs water and a bit more care.
A bubbler bong is a bubbler that stands on its own like a mini bong. It keeps a bubbler’s compact size and simple setup, but it sits on the table between hits and usually holds a bit more water. The Gear Premium Cache Money Bubbler Bong is a good example. It’s a good fit if you mostly smoke at home but don’t want a full-size piece.
The difference comes down to size and how you use it. A bong is bigger, holds more water and gives you a bigger rip, and it usually has a removable bowl and downstem. A bubbler is compact, has fewer parts, and is easier to pass around or take somewhere. If you want water filtration without the size of a bong, a bubbler is the sweet spot.
Fill the water chamber, pack the bowl and light it while you pull. The smoke travels down through the water, cools off, and comes up through the mouthpiece. Most handheld bubblers have a carb, which is a small hole you cover while you pull and then release to clear the chamber.
You only need enough water to cover the bottom of the downstem or perc. Too much and you’ll get a mouthful, and too little cuts down the filtration. Pour it in through the mouthpiece, take a test pull, and then pack your bowl.
Mini bubblers run around 4.5 to 6 inches tall. They’re easy to hold, easy to stash and good for quick solo sessions. If you’ve been searching for a mini bubbler water pipe, start here.
A Sherlock bubbler has a long curved neck like the classic detective pipe. A hammer bubbler has a flat base, so it can stand up on its own between hits. Both are handheld with a built-in bowl.
In a recycler bubbler, the water moves through a loop as you pull, which makes for an extra smooth hit with less splash. The Gear Premium Outcycler is a good example.
A dual chamber bubbler runs the smoke through two chambers before it reaches you. You get a second round of filtration in a piece that’s still smaller than most bongs.
LIT Silicone bubblers are tough enough to survive a drop. That makes them good for camping, travel or anyone who’s broken one too many glass pieces, and LIT makes them in some fun shapes too.
Red Eye Glass has been making glass in Vancouver since 2003 and makes most of our glass bubblers, from small frosted pieces to big dual chamber pipes. Gear Premium makes thicker, heavier bubblers like the Outcycler and Gabriola. LIT Silicone covers the unbreakable side of things. For something with a little more style, the Jane West Twenties Collection bubbler is a design piece you won’t want to hide.
Change the water after every session or two. Most bubblers don’t come apart, so the easiest way to clean one is to plug the holes, add isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt, give it a good shake and rinse it with warm water. A bong cleaner and a set of cleaning caps make it even easier.
A glass bubbler is small, but it’s still glass. Dump the water before you leave and pack it in a padded bong bag so it gets there in one piece. If it’s going camping or to the beach, a silicone bubbler is the safer bet.
Once you’ve picked your bubbler, grab whatever else you need from our weed accessories. Every order ships discreetly from our Vancouver warehouse.
