Parts of a Bong

Knowing what each piece does makes it a lot easier to find the right replacement:

• Bowl: also called a slide or pull-out, this is where your flower goes. You pull it out to clear the chamber.
• Downstem: the glass tube that carries smoke from the bowl down into the water.
• Joint: where the downstem or bowl connects to the bong.
• Base: the bottom chamber that holds the water.
• Tube: the neck of the bong where smoke collects before you inhale.
• Mouthpiece: the top opening where you inhale.

Some bongs also have a percolator for extra filtration or an ice pinch that holds ice in the tube to cool your hits.

Bong Bowls and Pull-Outs

A fresh bong bowl can change how your bong hits. Choose from cone, barrel, hourglass and handle-style pull-outs, depending on how much you pack and how you like to grip it.

Downstems

A cracked or clogged downstem can ruin a good bong. Open-ended stems keep things simple, while diffuser stems have slits or holes at the bottom that turn your smoke into a burst of small bubbles for a cooler hit.

Ash Catchers

An ash catcher sits between your bowl and bong and catches ash and resin before it reaches your water. Choose a 45 or 90 degree model to match your bong’s joint.

Adapters and Interchangers

Bowl doesn’t fit? An adapter or interchanger lets you connect parts with different joint sizes, like using a 14mm bowl on a 19mm bong.

Bong Bowl and Downstem Sizes

Getting the size right is the most important part of buying a replacement.

• 14mm is the most common joint size on bongs today.
• 18mm and 19mm are the same size with two different names, and they’re common on larger bongs.
• 10mm shows up on smaller bongs and bubblers.
• 9mm and 12mm are less common, but some bongs, especially smaller or older pieces, use them.

Your bowl also needs the opposite fitting to your joint: a female joint takes a male bowl, and a male joint takes a female bowl.

Downstems are usually listed with two sizes, like 18mm to 14mm. The first number fits your bong’s joint and the second is the bowl size it takes. For length, measure from the top of the joint to where you want the stem to end. It should sit just under your water line.
