What Is a Gravity Bong?

A gravity bong uses water and gravity to fill a chamber with smoke, instead of pulling it through with your lungs like a regular bong. Once the chamber is full, you take it all in one go. The result is a big, dense hit from a small amount of flower, which is why the gravity bong has been a favourite for decades.

Why a Glass Gravity Bong Beats Homemade

Most people’s first gravity bong was a cut-up pop bottle and a bucket of water. It worked, but it was messy, it didn’t last, and nobody wants to inhale through plastic and a tinfoil bowl.

A glass gravity bong takes the same idea and turns it into a proper piece you can use again and again. Glass doesn’t change the taste of your flower, it’s easy to clean, and it looks a lot better on the shelf than a bottle. Every gravity bong ships discreetly across Canada.

How a Gravity Bong Works

There are three main styles of gravity bong, and they all work on the same idea:

  • Bucket style: a chamber sits inside a base full of water. Light the bowl and slowly lift the chamber. As it rises, the space inside pulls in smoke. Then take the bowl off, put your mouth over the top and push the chamber back down to send the smoke your way.
  • Waterfall style: water drains out of the bottom of the chamber, and as it empties, smoke gets pulled in from the bowl. Once it’s full, remove the bowl and inhale.
  • Rotating (hourglass) style: the piece has two chambers. Flip it over and the water drains from one side to the other, pulling smoke in as it goes. Flip it back and the water pushes the smoke out to you.

Why Gravity Bongs Hit So Hard

There’s no magic to it. A gravity bong fills the whole chamber before you inhale, and very little smoke escapes along the way. You end up taking in more smoke in one hit than you would with a regular bong, and it comes all at once. That’s why a small bowl goes a long way.

How to Use a Gravity Bong

A few tips for your first hit:

  • Pack a small bowl. A little flower makes more smoke than you’d expect.
  • Go slow. Lifting, draining or flipping too fast can pull embers into the chamber.
  • Exhale first. Breathe out fully before you inhale so you have room for the hit.
  • Keep it clean. Change the water after every session and rinse the glass regularly with a bong cleaner.

Gravity Bong vs Regular Bong

A regular bong pulls smoke through water with your own breath, so you control the size of each hit. A gravity bong fills the whole chamber first and then delivers it all at once. It’s great for a heavy session or getting the most out of a small amount of flower, but most people still keep a regular bong around for everyday use.
