What Does a Bong Adapter Do?

A bong adapter connects two pieces that don’t fit together on their own. Maybe your new bowl is 14mm and your bong is 19mm, or your mini rig has a 10mm joint and every banger you like is 14mm. An adapter fixes that for a few bucks, so you don’t have to buy new glass just because the joints don’t match.

Bong Joint Sizes and Types

10mm, 14mm and 18mm Joints

Bongs and rigs use three main joint sizes. 10mm is found on mini rigs and small pieces. 14mm is the most common size on bongs and dab rigs. 19mm shows up on bigger bongs and is often called 18mm, but they’re the same size. To check yours, measure across the outside of a male joint or the inside of a female joint. It will be close to 10, 14 or 19mm.

Male vs Female Joints

A male joint is frosted on the outside and slides in. A female joint is frosted on the inside and takes a male piece. Male always goes into female. That means your adapter needs to match two things: the joint on your bong and the piece you’re putting into it.

Types of Bong Adapters

Down Size Interchangers

A down size interchanger sits inside a bigger female joint so it can take a smaller piece. The 19mm to 14mm interchanger lets a 19mm bong take a 14mm bowl. That’s handy because 14mm bowls are everywhere. The 14mm to 10mm interchanger does the same thing one size smaller.

Up Size Interchangers

The 14mm to 19mm up size interchanger goes the other way. It plugs into a 14mm female joint and takes a 19mm male piece, so you can run a bigger bowl on a smaller joint.

10mm Male to 14mm Female Adapter

This adapter goes into a 10mm female joint and gives you a 14mm female joint to work with. It’s the easy way to run a full-size quartz banger or 14mm bowl on a mini rig.

14mm Female Adapter

When you have two male pieces that need to connect, a female adapter joins them. It works for a male banger on a rig with a male joint, or any time both ends are the wrong gender.

14mm Drop Downs

A drop down moves your banger down below the joint and away from your glass. That extra space keeps heat off your bong or dab rig. It also helps the banger sit level. If you want to catch oil at the same time, look at our reclaim catchers.

Ash Catcher Adapters

The 45 degree ash catcher adapter helps your ash catcher sit at the right angle on your bong. That way, it doesn’t lean or put strain on the joint.

Using an Adapter to Dab From Your Bong

To take a dab from your bong, you swap the bowl for a banger. If the sizes and genders already match, you don’t need anything else. If they don’t, a bong adapter or drop down bridges the gap. Pair it with a carb cap and your bong works as a dab rig in a pinch.

Tips for Using Bong Adapters

Every adapter adds a bit of height and puts more leverage on your joint, so don’t stack more than you need. Keep the frosted joints clean, because resin buildup can make glass stick. If a piece does get stuck, a soak in warm water usually loosens it up. Twist it free gently instead of forcing it.
