Incense and a good session have gone together for a long time. A holder keeps your stick or cone standing up while it burns and catches the ash before it lands on your table. It’s a simple, cheap way to keep your space smelling good, and a nice holder looks good on a shelf too.

Incense Holder vs Incense Burner

They’re the same thing. “Holder” usually means something that holds an incense stick, and “burner” usually means a dish for cones, but most people use the two names interchangeably. Either way, its job is to hold your incense safely and keep the ash in one place.

Types of Incense Holders

Stick Holders

A stick holder has a small hole that holds your incense stick at an angle, with a long base underneath to catch the ash as it falls. It’s the classic style and the easiest to use.

Cone Holders

Cone incense burns from the tip down, so it needs a flat, heat-safe dish to sit on. A cone holder gives it a stable spot to burn and keeps the heat off your furniture.

Backflow Burners

Backflow burners use special cones with a hole through the middle. As the cone burns, the smoke flows down instead of up, spilling over the burner like a little waterfall. They’re as much a piece of decor as they are an incense holder.

How to Burn Incense

Light the tip of your stick or cone and let it catch for a few seconds, then gently blow out the flame so it smoulders. Set it in your holder on a flat, heat-safe surface, away from curtains, paper and anything else that can catch. Never leave burning incense unattended, and crack a window if the room gets too smoky.
